About Us

The Brookfield Stars started in 1991 and have been a WIAA co-op ever since, bringing together players from Brookfield East, Brookfield Central, Wauwatosa East, Wauwatosa West, Menomonee Falls and Sussex Hamilton. Catholic Memorial was part of the co-op from 2012-13 through 2015-16. We play our home games at The Ponds of Brookfield.

What we're about

We want kids who work hard, treat people right and are proud to wear the jersey. We want them to leave with friends for life and still love hockey long after they're done playing here. Winning matters to us, but how we go about it matters more.

Coaches through the years

Okey Brumm, first head coach, through 1997-98 (stepped down in February 1998). Took the Stars to their first state tournament in 1998. Okey later owned and edited The Wisconsin Hockey News.

Notable players: Lee Jenke (All-Conference, All-State; Team Wisconsin, Rainy River, MSOE, then pro with the Flint Generals, Knoxville Ice Bears and Winston-Salem Thunderbirds). Mike Turcotte (joined Lee at MSOE).

Jeff Hiltz, early 1990s (exact seasons still being confirmed).

Notable players: Joe Jenke (All-Conference, All-State; went on to the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL, Team Wisconsin, Rainy River in International Falls and pro hockey in Europe). Nick Glander (played junior for the Soo Indians in the NAHL).

Mike Sullivan, 1998-99 to 2000-01.

Notable players: Dan Stierman, known for his leadership and scoring.

Jason Woods, 2001-02 to 2005-06 (three of those seasons as head coach). More Stars started moving on to junior and college hockey in these years.

Notable players: Matt Shapiro (All-Conference, All-State). AJ Sinner (All-Conference, All-State). Lief Bergquist (All-State honorable mention, 2004). Joel Rechlicz, who wasn't here long but made a big impact, and went on to play junior, the USHL, QMJHL, ECHL, AHL and the NHL with the Islanders and Capitals.

Al Mackenzie, 2006-07. Record still being gathered.

Notable players: AJ Sinner.

Matt Shapiro, 2007-08 to 2009-10.

Chris Frantz, 2010-11 to 2011-12. Took the team to the 2012 state semifinal.

Steve Chapin, 2012-13 to 2015-16, with Matt Shapiro as assistant. Record: 46-50-7.

Notable players from 2010-16: Robbie Fosdick (All-Conference, All-State; three seasons and 152 games with the Madison Capitols in the USHL, captain in his last year, then Northern Michigan in NCAA Division I). Matt Fosdick (All-Conference, All-State defenseman; two goals and two assists in a 7-2 playoff win over top-seeded Homestead on the way to state). Brandt Rogers (All-Conference, All-State). All-Conference: Eric Sinson, Riley Keays, Adam Weiner, John Rymaszewski, Mike Hawthorne, Nick Davis.

Greg Copeland, 2016-17 to present. The Stars won the Team Academic State Award in 2021. In 2023-24 they made the state final and lost 3-1 to Notre Dame. In 2024-25 they won a third straight conference title and went back to state as the top seed.
